Enigma 425 from Louis Poulsen
Enigma 425 was designed by Japanese designer Shoichi Uchiyama in 2003. Uchiyama presented a design idea to Louis Poulsen which deconstructed the traditional chandelier concept into slim layers of concentric circles. This involved floating shades held by ultrathin wires, providing a transparent and light expression.
The name enigma stands for ‘mystery’, referring to the fact that the shades appear to hover when viewed illuminated from a distance. The idea fitted well with Louis Poulsen´s product philosophy, and was a new interpretation of the multi-shade system - Japanese grace combined with Scandinavian simplicity. In 2018, the original aluminium version is joined by a new, black edition, expanding the design’s decorative possibilities, and creating a serene visual and atmospheric effect as it shapes and channels light.
The fixture emits glare-free, soft, comfortable downward light. The shade design ensures even illumination of the surface. The matt upper surface diffuses the light, while the shiny lower surface ensures optimal reflection.
