James Irvine (1958 - 2013) studied at the Royal College of Art. In 1984 he founded his own design studio in Milan. In 1988 he lived in Tokyo and worked in the design department of Toshiba. He was a member of the Olivetti Design Studio to 1993 and a partner of Sottsass Associati until 1997. In interiors Cappellini was the first client, later came internationally operating companies such as Arper, B & B Italia, Magis, Muji and Zumtobel. James Irvine designed for Thonet numerous products (A 660, A 1660, S 5000, S 123, S 1123), and advised the company from 2006 to 2011 as an art director.
